The thing I enjoyed most about doing the Voyager course was the new learning: the sharing of ideas with others, the learning about new perspectives and the theories about how to conduct a genuine inquiry.
I liked being able to select my own inquiry topic so I could pursue an area of interest to me personally. Our topic reinforced a lot of things for me.
I loved hearing from children, past students, families and staff about their views on Student Led Learning. This is supposedly what our whole school culture and philosophy is built on.
Hearing people's views and the overall inquiry results reinforced the significance of this for me. School should be about children and their learning, what they need, are interested in and also how they learn. I think this is the way of the future yet we are constantly asked to assess and analyse learning and behaviours in minute detail, - when everyone is so unique, particularly the children we work with.
As a team leader I think this relates to the children but also to my team - they are unique, learn and express themselves in different ways and have many varying viewpoints. We can't judge and quantify their performances either.
Learning how to get the most out of each person in a positive and fruitful way, is my goal and where I would like to take my learning further.
Voyager has been a really valuable experience for me because it has reinforced these things and given me a direction forward.
After many years in a team leader role, I really appreciate the opportunities I've had this year to do quality learning to improve my own leadership skills and ideas.
Meeting someone as talented and interesting as Vikram Murthy was a real added bonus!
